Excel opens a CSV file in one column: why and how to fix it

When you double-click a CSV, Excel splits it using your computer's list separator (a comma in the US/UK, a semicolon in much of Europe and Latin America). If the file uses the other one, everything lands in column A.

Fix 1: Import instead of double-clicking

Excel: Data › From Text/CSV, pick the file, set Delimiter (comma, semicolon, tab…) and File origin (choose 65001: Unicode UTF-8 if you see odd characters), then Load. Nothing on your system changes.

Fix 2: Text to Columns on the opened file

Select column A › Data › Text to Columns › Delimited › tick the right separator › Finish. Quick for small files; values with the separator inside quotes can still split wrongly.

Fix 3: Add a sep= line (Excel only)

Open the CSV in a text editor and add sep=, (or sep=;) as the very first line. Excel then uses that separator on double-click. Other programs see the line as data, so don't use this for files you send to databases.

Fix 4: Change the file, not Excel

Convert the file to the separator your Excel expects. In Rowlode: open the CSV (the delimiter is detected), choose the output delimiter (comma, semicolon, tab or pipe) and export. Or skip CSV altogether and export .xlsx – columns are then fixed regardless of region settings.

Changing the Windows list separator

Settings › Time & language › Language & region › Administrative language settings › Formats › Additional settings › List separator. This affects every program, and on comma-decimal locales (1,5) a comma list separator causes new problems – usually better to use Fix 1 or 4.

Have a big or messy CSV? Rowlode opens CSV files with millions of rows (multi-GB) in your browser, reading them from disk – filter, remove duplicates, sort, fix delimiter and encoding, and export CSV, Excel (split under the row limit), TSV, JSON or NDJSON. Nothing is uploaded. Viewing, filtering and dedupe are free; each export holds the first 10,000 rows until you buy a $12 lifetime license.

Questions and answers

Why does the same CSV open fine on my colleague's PC?

Their regional settings use the delimiter your file has. Excel's double-click behaviour depends on the computer, not the file.

On Mac?

Excel for Mac also uses the system's number/list format. Use Data › From Text, or convert the file.
