Split a CSV into multiple files

Upload limits, Excel’s row limit, e-mail size limits, import tools that choke on big files – there are many reasons to cut one big CSV into pieces. Rowlode can split three ways, and every part gets the header row.

Open Rowlode – free

Split by number of rows

  1. Open the file in Rowlode.
  2. In Export and split, choose Every … rows and enter for example 500000.
  3. Press Export. You get name_part001.csv, name_part002.csv, … – download them as one .zip or save them straight into a folder (Chrome / Edge).

Split by file size

Choose Every … MB to keep each part under an upload limit, for example 25 MB. Rows are never cut in the middle, so parts are a little under or over the size by at most one row.

One file per value

Choose One file per value of and a column – for example country – to get name_France.csv, name_Spain.csv, and so on. Up to 1,000 different values for CSV (200 for Excel).

Filter, clean and split in one go

Filters, duplicate removal, sorting and the column selection are applied before splitting. To get one Excel file per region with only three columns, set the filter, untick the other columns, and choose the split.

Questions and answers

Does each part get the header row?

Yes, every part starts with the header row (untick “Header row” if you don’t want it).

Can I split into Excel files?

Yes – choose Excel (.xlsx) as format. Splitting by size is only for CSV, TSV and JSON, because the size of a compressed .xlsx is not known in advance; split Excel files by rows.
