Filter a large CSV file
Often you don’t need all 30 million rows – just the orders from one country, or the rows where amount is over 1,000. Filter first, and the result usually fits in Excel.
Steps
- Open the file in Rowlode.
- Click + Add condition, pick a column, a condition and a value. Add more conditions and choose all conditions (AND) or any condition (OR).
- Press Apply. Rowlode reads the whole file once and shows the matching rows and how many there are.
- Export the matches – see to Excel or split them.
Conditions
| Condition | Example | Note |
|---|---|---|
| contains / does not contain | city contains “san” | case-insensitive unless you tick Aa |
| is / is not | status is “paid” | numbers compare as numbers: 7 is 7.0 |
| starts with / ends with | email ends with “@example.com” | |
| is empty / is not empty | phone is empty | spaces count as empty |
| > ≥ < ≤ | amount > 1000 | understands 1,234.50 / 1.234,50 / 1 234,50 / $ / € / % |
| matches regex | sku matches ^AB-\d{4}$ | JavaScript regular expressions |
Speed
Filtering reads the whole file once. On a normal laptop that is roughly 50–100 MB per second, depending on the number of columns – a 150 MB file takes 2–3 seconds.
Questions and answers
Can I filter dates?
Yes, for ISO dates (2024-05-31): “≥ 2024-01-01” works because they compare correctly as text. For dates like 31/05/2024 use “contains /2024” or a regular expression.
Is there a limit on matching rows?
No for exports. The table shows up to 5 million matches; exports always include all of them.
