Analyse a CSV with more than a million rows in Excel

A worksheet stops at 1,048,576 rows. Excel's Data Model (Power Pivot engine) doesn't have that limit – you can summarise tens of millions of rows with PivotTables, as long as you don't need to see them in a sheet.

Steps (Excel for Windows, Microsoft 365 / 2016+)

  1. Data › Get Data › From File › From Text/CSV › choose the file.
  2. In the preview, click the arrow next to Load › Load To…
  3. Choose Only Create Connection and tick Add this data to the Data Model.
  4. Insert › PivotTable › From Data Model, and build your summary.

To filter or remove columns before loading, use Transform Data first – fewer columns means a smaller, faster model.

Limits to be aware of

  • 32-bit Excel runs out of memory quickly; use 64-bit Excel for large models.
  • You can't scroll through raw rows or edit them; you work with PivotTables, measures and Power Query steps.
  • Excel for Mac's Power Query support for the Data Model is more limited than on Windows.

Other free routes

  • Split the file into parts under 1,048,576 rows and open them one by one (how).
  • Command line: DuckDB (SELECT … FROM 'file.csv'), csvkit or Python pandas – powerful, if you're comfortable with code.
  • Filter first: if you only need part of the data, filter the big file down below the limit and open the result in Excel normally.

When a viewer is quicker

To look at the rows, find specific records, remove duplicates or cut the file into Excel-sized pieces, Rowlode opens the full CSV in the browser (2 million rows index in about a second on a typical PC; multi-GB files take longer) and exports .xlsx files or sheets that each stay under the row limit.

Have a big or messy CSV? Rowlode opens CSV files with millions of rows (multi-GB) in your browser, reading them from disk – filter, remove duplicates, sort, fix delimiter and encoding, and export CSV, Excel (split under the row limit), TSV, JSON or NDJSON. Nothing is uploaded. Viewing, filtering and dedupe are free; each export holds the first 10,000 rows until you buy a $12 lifetime license.

Questions and answers

What happens if I just double-click a 2-million-row CSV?

Excel loads the first 1,048,576 rows and warns that the file wasn't loaded completely. If you save, the rest is lost.

Does Google Sheets help?

No – Google Sheets is limited to 10 million cells per spreadsheet, which is smaller for wide files.
